Did you know you can draw on your food? I love today's creative idea because I'm excited to share a little edible drawing trick with you. Today I've made OREO dipped cookies with a little extra touch. This classic Christmas cookie isn't so much a recipe as it is a tutorial for decorating. You start off with pre-made OREO chocolate cookies and you dip them and decorate them yourself. You can buy pre-dipped OREOs, however, you can't add sprinkles and other fun edible embellishments without fresh, not-yet-dry, frosting added. SO, start with naked cookies and add your own art! I'll show you how…
OREO DIPPED CHRISTMAS COOKIES
I've created a couple different styles of OREO dipped Christmas cookies. Dipping the cookies is pretty straight forward. Just use melted chocolate or Almond Bark Note: Almond bark is not almond.. I don't know exactly what it is, but it's a candy chocolate that melts smoothly and dries, perfect for chocolate dipped treats. Almost bark is available in vanilla or milk chocolate flavors.
What you'll need:
- Microwave safe bowl
- Fork
- Parchment paper
- Almond Bark
- Christmas Candy sprinkles
- Candy/edible markers
Note: You can use waxed paper instead of parchment paper. It's just to protect your counter. I perfer parchment paper because nothing seems to stick to it.. I love it!
First there is the half dip.
These are the easiest I think because you don't even have to really worry about how you're dipping. Just follow the instructions on the melted chocolate package to melt your chocolate and then dip half the cookie in the chocolate. Set the cookie down on parchment paper, sprinkle with your Christmas sprinkles and let it dry.
The second kind of OREO dipped Cookie I've made is a full dipped cookie.
This is a littler tricker. instead of just dipping half the cookie, you want to dip the entire thing and make sure its coated on all sides. To do this, you need to grab a fork. Place the cookie in the melted chocolate, use the fork to slowly and carefully lift the cookie out of the chocolate. Let the excess chocolate drip off. Place the cookie on parchment paper, add your sprinkles and let dry.
Now here's something fun! Use a candy marker to draw or write on the dried chocolate coated cookie. Make sure to have a paper towel nearby so you can wipe chocolate off the tip of your marker. This does take a little practice.
The third kind of OREO dipped cookie I've created is Santa and Elves.
These are full dipped cookies with extra embellishment and detail. You'll need a little paint brush for this as well as red, white and green sugar. First coat the entire cookie in melted chocolate. Place on the parchment paper. Carefully sprinkle white sugar to create a beard and red sugar for the hat. Then using the paint brush, paint chocolate on the trim of the hat and sprinkle with more white sugar. Using the candy marker draw eyes, nose and little mouth. Then, using the paint brush again, brush melted chocolate where you'd like the mustache and sprinkle white sugar over it. I added a little melted chocolate and then a larger, flat, white candy for the puffy ball on the hat.
To make the elves you follow the same steps that you used to create the Santa hat. Leave off the beard of course.
Today I'm sharing this Christmas Cookie idea as part of a virtual Christmas cookie exchange with some favorite food blogging buddies. Cookie exchange parties are so much fun! You show up with a stack of your own cookies and go home with a box full of all kinds of cookies made by everyone else that has joined in. I love the creativity and all the different flavors spread out across the cookie table. It's like a cookie art gallery and I love browsing! I also love sampling ~wink. So today here are over 40 super scrumptious cookie recipes to choose from to bring to your own cookie exchange party!
