If only my family was as super-powered as the Parr family, wouldn't superhero talents come in handy these days? If you haven't seen Incredibles 2 yet, head to the theater, it's a great film for the whole family! Today I'm sharing my Incredibles 2 review plus Incredibles 2 coloring pages and printable activity sheets. This Disney animated movie is the sequel to the modern animated classic, The Incredibles.
This second movie has stayed true to the original storyline we know and love while bringing our favorite superhero family back into the spotlight, without skipping a beat… almost a decade and a half later. In Incredibles 2, the Parr family is back in action, despite the legalities of “using super powers” and they are as funny as ever. Tagging along with this family of Supers is definitely a fast-paced ride. Disney Pixar's Incredibles 2 opened in theaters June 15th and it is an incredible ride!
Incredibles 2 review – and they start off running
As I sat and watched, I felt like no time had passed at all since the first film. The characters felt familiar and the story never skipped a beat. This family-friendly animated movie from Disney Pixar's Animation studios was fun to watch and even more fun to experience as a date night with my husband. We cracked up together at all the inside parenting jokes. I think this movie is great for all ages. There's plenty to keep the kids engaged and the adult entertained. The action is fast-paced but not too scary for little kids. The villains look nice enough but really make you wish you could roll your eyes at them in person. Dash is hilarious, Jack Jack has a laugh that will make you giggle every time you hear it and Violet might remind you of the shy, awkward teen you've been before.
Let's recap. What's Incredibles 2 About
Whether you've been an Incredibles fan since the first film, or this is your first introduction to the super squad, there's fun waiting to be watched in Incredibles 2. In 2004 the first film introduced us to the Parr family of 5, aka The Incredibles (along with some superhero pals) as they aimed to protect their city and hold on to their superhero status.
As “The Incredibles” adventure came to an edge-of-your-seat finale, Syndrome was foiled—thanks to baby JackJack and an ill-advised cape—and his jet exploded into a fiery ball, destroying the Parr family home. But the family was more bonded than ever; Violet showed off her newfound confidence, and Dash discovered that second place would do just fine. It seemed like a happily-ever-after ending until someone called the Underminer declared “war on peace and happiness.”
Incredibles 2 Design and Styling
14 years ago I wasn't paying attention to the art of movie making as much as I do now. With over a decade of technology advancements, the design, theming and overall look of this film has stayed the course between the two movies. The entire storyline follows a mid-century modern look with clean lines, distinct colors and unique shapes and patterns. In Incredibles 2 I noticed even the acting reminded me of movies from the 1960's, the mannerisms and dialogue have a unique approach inspired by time period. I had to go back and watch the first Incredibles movie just to see if I could pick up on similar time-period details. Look at this awesome featured art piece. I've seen this art in photos with some of my friends standing in front of it… it's huge and stunning!
THAT’S INCREDIBLE — In “Incredibles 2,” Helen is in the spotlight, while Bob is at home with Violet, Dash and baby Jack-Jack, whose superpowers are still under wraps. When a new villain hatches a brilliant and dangerous plot, the family and Frozone team up to do what they do best. Featuring the voices of Holly Hunter, Craig T. Nelson, Sarah Vowell, Huck Milner and Samuel L. Jackson, Disney•Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” opens in theaters on June 15, 2018. (Concept Art) © 2017 Disney•Pixar. All Rights Reserved.
Key players from the original Incredibles cast and crew are back again for a fantastic sequel that does not disappoint. Incredibles 2 features our favorite superhero family with the return of Holly Hunter as the voice of Helen/Elasti girl. Craig T. Nelson returns as the voice of Bob aka Mr. Incredible. Sarah Vowell, an American-history author, plays the voice of Violet while Samuel L. Jackson returns as the voice of Lucius (Frozone). Dash, the 10-year-old super-boy was played by Spencer Fox in the first Incredibles movie and by Huckleberry “Huck” Milner in Incredibles 2 (it's difficult to sound the part of a 10-year-old boy when your own voice grows up, right?). Brad Bird is back again as the voice of our favorite fashion visionary, EDNA “E” MODE as well as writing and directing Incredibles 2.
No spoilers in this review of Incredibles 2
I want you to enjoy the movie and love all the unexpected surprises as much as I did, so no spoilers from me today. I suggest you just stop reading and head to the theater. That said, I can tell you, however, this family film is chiming right in with the trend of girl power we've been seeing lately. The guys aren't left behind, but the girls are stepping up, both good and bad, and it's fun to watch. Plus, Elasti-girl gets a shiny new toy, and it's so purdy!
The Parr family has a little re-balancing to do with how the family works together. Helen and Bob are switching roles a bit. While Helen takes on a new job promoting the crime fighting scene, Dad is taking on a few more household duties, including “new math” (this makes me laugh and cry at once). It reminds me a little of Mr. Mom without the apron. It's so entertaining.
According to [writer/director] Brad Bird, the story strives to strike a balance between the adventure and the more ordinary aspects of family life. “It’s a dance between the mundane and the fantastic,” he says. “We don’t do one for very long without doing the other.
There's also plenty of action-packed goodness with new villains, new challenges and new character insight. The animation style and character personalities stay true to the original movie as Incredibles 2 picks up right where Incredibles 1 left off.

Incredibles 2 New Villians and New Friends
While Incredibles 2 continues with our favorites, the Parr family and Lucious aka Frozone, are back for another round of spectacular superhero storytelling, there's a whole crew of new characters to capture your attention. What I love most about Incredibles 2 is the continued unexpected twists in the story. I kept finding myself wondering who was good and who was bad. Who's on our side and who do we need to boo? Some of the characters you might think are easy to pick out, I found myself second-guessing my votes. My husband even speculated about half-way through the movie. So while you might find yourself calling the next move, don't hold your breath, you could end up happily wrong.
Let's talk about Jack Jack for a minute. This cutie is the youngest member of the Parr family but definitely my favorite. We see this mini superhero a bit in the first Incredibles movie but he takes the stage to appear front and center in Incredibles 2. We see which super powers he's growing into, each was unpredictable and created a laugh-out-loud moment throughout the theater.
Every parent of toddlers will find scene after scene hilarious while this bundle of joy super sizes the chaos of toddler life… it brings back exhausting memories of tiny tot fun. Let's just say, multiple talents (or personalities) only partially describes this cutie. Kids are funny – Jack Jack cracks me up!
In the meantime, here's a couple Incredibles 2 trailers – take a look at this pint-sized hero.
Writer/director Brad Bird looked to his own life when he created the original characters of “The Incredibles.” “Everyone’s powers are inspired by their role in the family and where they are in their lives at that time,” says Bird. “We played with traditional archetypes—the strong father figure and the multitasking mother—but in the end, we found that most of us can relate to all of the characters in some way. We’ve all been that impatient 10-year-old or the insecure teenager. We’ve all felt like we’re shouldering an impossible load between home and work or school, and we’ve all felt like we’re being pulled in too many directions.”
A few Fun Facts about Incredibles 2
have you ever noticed how much goes into not only the storytelling of a movie but the look and feel of an animated movie? What you see tells half the story. Here are a few fun Incredibles 2 facts to highlight what goes into the visual storyline.
- In “Incredibles 2,” Bob finds that keeping up with three kids, including a toddler with newly revealed super powers, is challenging—and tiring. Filmmakers strategically dressed the character to reflect his state of mind. The more tired Bob gets, the more grays and beiges he wears. And as he begins to take charge again, his wardrobe reflects his newfound confidence.
- The design of billionaire businessman Winston Deavor went through many iterations before filmmakers determined that the character’s determination and drive was reflective of a shark. Winston’s look took on sharp angles, and the slant of his forehead resembles a shark fin. He even wears a sharkskin suit.
- Winston’s super-smart sister Evelyn has the same tilt to her eyes that Winston sports, but artists chose a different animal to inspire her look. The character was often compared to a cat who is laidback, confident and comfortable wherever she goes.
- When production designer Ralph Eggleston and several members of the art team traveled to Palm Springs to soak up the area’s architecture for inspiration for the look of “Incredibles 2,” they were treated to a tour of several mid-century-modern homes. The team was particularly excited to see that most of the homes they visited had a familiar book on the coffee table: “The Art of The Incredibles.” (take a look at the newer The Art of Incredibles 2 while you're at it.)
- Artists designed a new home for the Parr family, whose house was destroyed at the end of the first film. But story changes called for a much bigger, much more extravagant home for the Parrs, so designers went back to the drawing board, creating a 38,000 square-foot house that features multiple rooms, unusual architectural features, over-the-top gadgets, water features and a floor that moves like a sliding puzzle. • The home originally designed for the Parrs did ultimately make the film. In the final minutes of “Incredibles 2,” we see a key character emerge from what is now his home.
