Tis’ the season for cookies so let’s talk about DIY holiday cookie art and my decorating frosting recipe. We LOVE holiday cookie making day around here, so I’m always coming up for new ideas to try. We have our go-to cookie recipes we love to make year after year, but there’s always room for a new idea. So, this year I thought we’d get artsy and decorate each no-bake cookies with royal icing – and it works beautifully. So I’m sharing the fun with you.

DIY Holiday Cookie Art and Frosting Recipe

I love decorating cookies. You don’t have to have fancy skills to make pretty cookies, you just need a little time and some creative thinking – I’m sure you have both!

Easy No Bake Cookies

First let’s make a batch of no-bake cookies. These simple cookies are sooooo easy to make and taste great! When all you want to do is decorate a cookie, this is the cookie for you. No mixing or waiting or baking… just making and decorating!

Ingredients

  • Crackers
  • Almond bark
  • Food coloring

These holiday cookies are super easy to make. You just need water crackers, graham cracker or Ritz crackers and some almond bark. Melt the almond bark per the package instructions and coat the crackers. Let cool/dry thoroughly.

Cookie Decorating Icing – aka Royal icing

I have a royal icing recipe we use to make cookie art that is so fabulous and versatile. So the recipe today is add some flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 TBSP milk
  • 1 TBSP light corn syrup

Mix together ingredients and then have fun decorating.

So using Chocolate along bark along with peppermint flavored royal icing and you’ll have yourself some yummy mint chocolate no bake cookies! I used food grade essential oil for the flavoring, and you don’t need much.  I think orange or almond would also make fantastic icing flavors to pair with chocolate.

Decorating Christmas cookies

Mix you a batch of royal icing. Add flavoring and food coloring and put in a bag with the smallest icing tip you have. Draw your outside lines first and then fill in the open spaces if you’d like. I tried drawing mostly “line art” for these cookies.

If you aren’t up to drawing any art on your cookies, you can also decorate them with traditional sprinkles and cookie candies. Make sure to add these cookie candies white the almond bark is still warm so the candies stick.

    • Thank YOU! We usually make Ritz Cracker cookies every year too… make a sandwich with Ritz and peanut butter, then dip in candy chocolate and decorate. SO GOOD!
