The other night my kids were getting grumpy at who could pick a show to watch so I turned off the TV. In the middle of the TV whining I decided to turn it into a “let's pretend”.
What if there was no TV ever, what would happen?
Oh my goodness, you'd think the world would end. So to make it more fun and just see if the miserable complaints could get worse I threw into the mix, “what if there were no computers, what would you do?”.
My 8 year old answered without stalling a bit “then you could make real art mom“.
WOW! I didn't expect that, of all the comments.. really?
“Real art”… WOW again. I can paint. I can draw, I can craft and I can collage. Heck, I can even sew… I just really love my digital art and the options it allows for. However, if there were no computers, would I be making a living from my art? Probably not because there is no way I could reach the audience I have without social media and the powers of internet marketing. So that got me thinking, if there were no computers, what would I be doing?
Have you asked yourself the same? What WOULD you do if there were no computers? Off the top of my head, I don't have any idea of an answer for that. I love all things digital. I love coding and I love drawing. I love social media and I love learning. I wouldn't be able to do anything with crafting without the computer because I know I don't want to become a traveling craft show lady. When I was in 5th grade I had a little handmade invitation business.. maybe I would fall back on that idea. Handpaint cards for people, that could work, I would like that.
Every now and then I stop to listen to people outside my geek circles and it's only then that I'm reminded there is a whole world out there that hardly touch their computers compared to my typical day. They survive. They feed their families. They learn new things each day… I just don't remember how they do it.
