I love peanut butter. My whole family loves peanut butter. I think peanut butter could be assigned as it's own food group in our house… we put it on pancakes, french toast, waffles and in cream of wheat (tastes like peanut butter cookie dough… so good!). Now we turned it into meal item for dinner. Toasted peanut butter sandwiches are by no means my own invention, I hear Elvis Presley loved them… although I loved them way before I ever knew who Elvis was. Today I'll show you how to make a whole pile of these delicious sandwiches all at once.
Ingredients:
- Peanut Butter – I prefer creamy, but chunky will work too
- Banana sliced about 1/4 – 1/2″ thick
- Bread
- Butter
You'll also need a skillet and a spatula.
How to make your own toasted peanut butter banana sandwiches
If you've ever made a grilled cheese sandwich, this is just the same… just nuttier.
- Preheat your skillet as per the equipment directions.
- First butter one side of each slice of bread. You'll need 2 slices of bread per sandwich, because this is, indeed, a sandwich we are making.
- Place the bread on the skillet, butter side down. Add a dollop (or we like to call them “glops”) of peanut butter and allow to cook for 1-2 minutes. You'll notice the the peanut butter appear to be melting. Using a spoon, gently spread the peanut butter around the bread… if it does not spread easily, wait another minute.
- Add banana slices to half the bread slices and cook for another minute.
- Using the spatula, create a complete sandwich by turning over the slice of bread without a banana on top of the banana slice bread.. Flip sandwich to ensure both sides have cooked evenly.
- Remove, cut in half and enjoy. (You might want to let it cook just a little bit before serving).
You can add soup or chili to this if you'd like a more well rounded meal.
You can make a yummy, non-cooked variation that's great for lunches. Just spread peanut butter on a slice of bread , top with sliced bananas and then complete with a second slice of bread. I remember when I was really young I would add potato chips to the middle of these sandwiches for an extra crunchy surprise… so good! So bad for you, but so delicious! One last thought, if you'd like to reduce the amount of fat, other than using less peanut butter, toast your bread in the toaster oven and omit the butter all together. You simply put the sandwich together, peanut butter and banana slices and then toast for about 2 minutes or so. make sure to put some kind of liner/parchment paper in the toaster oven to avoid any bit nutty mess on the toaster tray. This option isn't nearly as scrumptious, but a little more calorie smart.
Do you have a favorite sandwich or peanut butter treat? I'd love to hear about it!
