When it comes to Halloween, I think my all time favorite is Candy Corn. Candy corn to eat and candy corn crafts, decor and other treats. I just love everything about it. So today I'm making some projects using a recycled t-shirt. So get the kids to help you – pick up some Crayola fabric crayons, a big white t-shirt and get ready for more creative Halloween crafting fun!
DIY Candy Corn Play Dress
We're actually going to make the art to decorate the t-shirt. Then we are making a candy corn t-shirt, a no-sew play dress and a Halloween treat bag (or the idea of it). AND, you can make any of these in under 15 minutes!
Materials you need:
- Printable candy corn coloring page template (download link below)
- Fabric crayons – orange, yellow and black
- White t-shirt – this is a men's extra large
- Scissors
- Iron and ironing board or other ironing surface
Instructions:
- Print out the coloring page and color it. Make sure to cover the areas well, this is no time to light coloring. The more you color, the better the color transfer.
- Place the coloring page, crayon coloring facing the fabric, on the t-shirt. Place a piece of parchment paper on top and iron for about 15 seconds, moving the iron around.
- carefully lift up a corner of the picture and check that you like the color transfer.
- Repeat step two until you've covered the shirt with as many candy corn as you'd like… or the transfer color fades too much.
- Each application, the color will fade a little more.
End there to make the t-shirt. To make the dress follow these steps:
- Cut off the sleeves of the t-shirt.
- Use strips of fabric from the sleeves to tie at the should.
- I did not stitch up the armholes because we're just using this as a play dress. You could, however, easily hem the unfinished edges for a more complete little girl's dress.
To make the treat/tote bag:
- Cut a few inches off the bottom of the shirt and stitch the bottom closed. (You don't even have to cut any fabric off… I think an extra large shirt is too big for a treat bag for kids, but you can decide on the size you'd like.
That's it! 3 in 1 craft choices all using the candy corn art transfer method. Which are you going to make?
You can also use this coloring page for all kinds of other crafts or just color it. If you like to doodle your own designs, use the page as a template and fill it in for your own zentangle fun!
