Have you picked up a package of the Halloween themed OREO cookies this year? Not only is the yummy center cream orange, each cookie is imprinted with a Halloween scene. This is the perfect treat to use for a fun Halloween OREO cookie memory match game. One side of each cookie has all the same design and then there are 5-6 different designs on the other side. AND, I've noticed the images have changed since we played last year – you could start collecting OREO cookies if you wanted! Keep in mind, if you buy the white cream filled cookies, they won't have the Halloween designs on them, so you're going to have to make a batch of OREO cookie eyeballs instead. Oh no!
I noticed these Halloween OREO cookies last year. It was a fun surprise to open the package and find all the unique images. So i tried to take pictures to share with you, but my family ate most of the bag before I remembered I wanted to get some pics. By the time I remember, the package was 1/2 empty and daylight was gone. I'm sorry you've had to sit and wait a whole year for this! I was shopping last weekend and saw the OREOs again and remembered our fun Memory game, so I grabbed a bag and I tried to get more photos for you. My family tackled the cookies again. I know, don't say it. No, writing a sign or hiding doesn't help… they grab a cookie and instead of making them put it back, I demand they bring me one too. It's bad leadership or poor parenting, I don't know which!
Halloween OREO Cookie Memory Game
If you don't know how to play the memory game, it's super simple. The goal is to discover matches or like items. So, with the OREOs, this is how we play.
- Lay out all the cookies individually on a table. Each cookie should have the same image facing up, so the traditional OREO logo design on the cookie is what you should see on all the cookies.
- Each player takes a turn, selecting two cookies to turn over. If the newly displayed images match, the player gets to keep the cookies. If the designs don't match, turn the cookies back over and the next player takes a turn.
- Now, here's where we bend the rules sometimes. Typically, if a player finds a match, they get to select another pair of cookies to try to match. However, with 5 of us playing and only so many cookies, sometimes we limit the turn to one pair of cookies per turn. You decide what works best for you.
- Continue to take turns until all the cookie pairs have been discovered.
- The winner is the player with the most matching pairs.
Winning and prizes – eating the cookies IS the prize! How easy is that? However, I highly recommend you limit up front how many cookies the winner gets to eat. Also, unless you want a sad end to an otherwise fun activity, I suggest allowing every player at least one cookie, winner or not. Yes, that might sound like common sense… I've listened to my kids come up with rules and prizes, they aren't that fair.
What I like most about playing a memory game with OREOs is there aren't enough cookies for the game to last too long – can you imagine OREO monopoly?? Also it's very a very tactile game. You can feel the shapes of the designs. The kids can touch and discover what the cookie art feels like. Who doesn't love to play with their food? So if you're heading out for more Halloween treats this weekend, grab yourself a package of OREOs and play a game of memory match. If you don't get around to playing, yay for you, you'll have a package of yummy cookies to enjoy when your kids don't want to share their candy! If you're at least hungry for an OREO right now, my job here is done.
