DIY Pencil Toppers

Written by: | Published: August 13, 2015 | Updated: August 14, 2015

Make your own pencil toppers! You can make silly pencil toppers or sparkly pencil toppers or maybe both. Buy plain pencils in bulk and then have fun decorating them however you like! Today I’m going for the glitter and googley eyes because we like silly sparkle around here. When you have to get school supplies together, we always go for the cheapest we can find, the Dollar Tree is our favorite place to shop! But, we still want some fun and unique items in our backpacks… so of course we have to DIY our school supplies with some school crafts!

Grab some glue, glitter, google eyes and a few pencils. Maybe a little twine. I like to paint my glue on, but some people like to dip the pencils. If you want to be able to use the eraser, paint the glue and then roll the pencils in the glitter. You can also wrap the pencil with twine, after painting on the glue.

These pencil toppers were decorated using a bigger/chunkier glitter and then some kind of a plastic flakes kind of glitter (those pink flakes). If you used a fine glitter, you’d get a different look. You can also paint on a craft paint (acrylic craft paint) and leave just the paint or coat the wet paint with a glitter for a pretty sparkle.

This pom pom google eye pencil topper is just regular craft glue and a craft pom pom. Put the glue on the top of the pencil and then hold the pom pom in place for about 30 seconds or until it appears to stay on. Let it dry over night. I did all the twine decorating before adding the pom pom. Once all the glue has dried, I added the eyes with a tooth pick and a tiny bit of glue.

I love these kinds of projects because you can customize what you’re making so easily. Add glitter or not. Add silly eyes or not. Use blue or use orange or use blue, orange and pink… whatever you like! The BEST part – the kids love these kinds of activities and they are easy to do.

This blue nose pencil topper is my favorite! It just makes me laugh. Use a small paint brush and some glue to place the eyes and the nose. The nose is just a tiny craft pom pom – you can usually find them in small packages with multiple mixed colors at the craft store. I think my son would like the silly faces much better than the glitter – but I’m sure there has got to be a way to make a fancy football pencil topper and sneak in some glitter… right?
